Understand the Account-Opening Process in 3 Steps

Step 1: Complete Your Application

Provide the information needed for the custodian to review your application and determine whether the self-directed IRA can be established.

Some personal information may be required to verify your identity, maintain accurate account records and satisfy applicable legal and custodial requirements.

A Monetary Gold representative can help you identify which forms may apply to your situation.

Step 2: Fund Your Account

If the application is approved and the account is established, it may be funded through an eligible contribution, IRA-to-IRA transfer, direct rollover or other permitted funding method.

The appropriate process and paperwork will depend on the type of retirement account you currently have, where the funds are held and the requirements of the institutions involved.

Step 3: Provide Purchase Direction

After cleared funds become available in the account, you can provide direction for the acquisition of certain precious metals that meet applicable IRA eligibility requirements.

The metals are then delivered under the custodian’s approved storage arrangement and held on behalf of the IRA in accordance with applicable requirements.

Common Questions

Do I need to complete every form?

Not necessarily. The forms required will depend on how your account is being established, how it will be funded and whether another person or company needs authorization to receive account information.

Can I transfer an existing IRA?

An eligible IRA may be transferred directly from one IRA custodian to another. Eligibility, documentation and processing requirements are determined by the custodians involved.

Can I roll over a former employer retirement account?

Certain former employer retirement accounts may be eligible for a direct rollover or another permitted distribution and rollover process.

Eligibility and procedures depend on the account type, plan rules and individual circumstances.

When can precious metals be selected?

A customer may generally provide purchase direction after the account has been established and cleared funds are available.

Any acquisition remains subject to product eligibility, pricing, availability and custodian requirements.

Which precious metals can be held in an IRA?

Only certain coins and bullion products may qualify for inclusion in an IRA. Eligibility depends on the specific product and applicable requirements. Not every precious-metals product qualifies.

Where are IRA-owned metals stored?

Certain precious metals held by an IRA must remain within an arrangement that satisfies applicable custodial and physical-possession requirements.

Personal possession by the account owner may result in tax consequences. Customers should review the custodian’s account documents and consult an independent tax professional regarding their circumstances.

How long does the process take?

Processing times vary.

The completeness of the application, the custodian’s review, the transaction type and the institution currently holding the retirement funds can all affect timing.

Monetary Gold does not guarantee account approval or processing times.

Can someone help me complete the application?

A Monetary Gold representative can explain the general process, help you access the appropriate forms and provide navigation assistance.

The customer remains responsible for reviewing the documents, providing accurate information and deciding whether to sign and submit them.
